I have commitment issues.
I've known about this issue for some time now and just remembered that I'm suppose to be blogging every day and I flaked out after what 3 or 4 posts? Because of my commitment issues, I couldn't commit to maintaining my Myspace account. I signed onto it this evening and realized that the last time I signed on was in 2009. I laughed a little cause I swore I wouldn't jump on the "Facebook wagon" but I did anyway.
Upon reviewing my old blogs on Myspace, I came across one of my favorite quotes of ALL time and couldn't believe that I haven't read it in a very long time. All at once I was happy that I had blogged it because the reminder is much needed these days.
I took a walk today around a lake outside my work. I needed to get away by myself for a while, just to get out in the quiet and just listen to the world, the things that I miss everyday: the sound of leaves blowing in the wind, the random chirping bird, passing cars on a nearby highway... little sounds.. I'm so busy I don't take the time to notice.
I swore to myself at the young age of 17 1/2 that I wouldn't take life for granted. I swore that I'd always make the time to take the time to notice little things. Somehow along the way I've lost sight of that commitment because I took a ride on a loud train called "life".
One of my favorite movies of all time is the movie "The Crow". The movie, in a nutshell, is about a love crazed man who loses the love of his life and his own life to a group of criminals. The man, Brandon Lee, though dead can't rest in peace until he comes back from the dead (by the power of a raven) to avenges the life of his beloved and his own. Brandon Lee, ironically ended up loosing his own life during the shooting of the film in a freak accident on the set of the movie. In his final interview he quoted the following quote from the book: The Sheltering Sky

Because we do not know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well, and yet everything happens only a certain number of times and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps 4 or 5 times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20 and yet it all seams limitless.
It's been over 2 years since I read the quote and oddly enough it always comes back up at a time when I really need to hear it.
I told one of my friends today that I think the universe is trying to speak to me. Coming across this today was just the final loud GONG of the day that questioned me "Are you listening?"
Today I'm noticing the little things:
The Chik-fil-A biscut that was waiting on me at my desk at work (because my friends at work rock!)
The weather, because even though it was cold today the air tasted sweet
Birds in bushes
Cars on the highway
The number of times that I laughed so hard because someone said something funny
Bright smiles
Possibilities
Pizza
Family
Nonsense cartoons and kid's shows that my kids can't live without.
Today was a good day and I'm committed to trying to do my best to making the time to take the time.
